Comic Review: Dejah of Mars #3
We reach the penultimate issue as Dejah's search for John Carter leads to violent results.
Barely surviving the attack of the deadly dolls(!), Dejah runs into an old-and bitter-acquaintance named Enn Pace, as well as the self-righteous Ka Pell. With help from old friend Them Rek, Dejah tracks down the cause of the sell of Red Eggs to the rich and powerful of Helium! Before long Dejah discovers who may be behind Carter's disappearance and and who may be involved.
Pretty much just a setup issue for the final blowout, Dejah of Mars #3 continues writer Mark Rahner's love of bloody action, cannibal horror (seriously is everyone on Barsoom closet Leatherfaces?), surprise twists and butt-kicking female action. In short if you loved his earlier work this one is for you! For the rest it gets a little too carried away with Dejah becoming Schwarzenegger at various points while the attack of the dolls sequence at the beginning seemed a little silly (there was also a similiar sequence in the film Barbarella. A homage perhaps?). Still it builds nicely and should satisfy those waiting for the next issue.
The usual good marks for Jethro Morales' artwork, capturing the characters and action quite well. I also have to give a shout out to the coloring in this book, credited to Salvatore Aiala Studios. For once the red men of Barsoom are RED, not just people with disappearing tans. I hope this continues in the future.
So there you have it guys and gals. A not bad issue, just prepare for some blood. Until next time faithful readers.
